George Paxton and Martin Crane founded Coed Records in New York in 1958, and out of their Brill Building offices they oversaw a steady stream of vocal group releases through the early '60s, drawing largely on East Coast talent. This rather brief sampler (it runs just a little over 25 minutes in length) features ten tracks recorded between 1958 and 1964 by some of Coed's biggest groups, including the Crests, the Rivieras, and the Duprees. Paxton's '40s big-band background came in particularly handy with the Duprees, who combined group vocals with deliberately nostalgic swing orchestra backing on hits like "You Belong to Me." Other highlights here include the Crests' "Sixteen Candles" and two songs from the group's so-called "angel series," "The Angels Listened In" and "Pretty Little Angel." Too short to be anything but a drive-by introduction to the Coed catalog, this budget set barely puts its foot in the door, but what is here is well produced and fun. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
